The Improvement of Musical Instruments’ Sound by „Acupuncture“ Treatment
A Description of a new method for sound tuning of musical string instruments
My methods of sound modification are based on the research of the Russian violin maker Denis Yarovoi. He discovered a specific pattern of individual local tones while tapping old Italian violins.
I utilize this method of tapping when looking for irregularities in the tuning of an instrument. To make adjustments, a variety of techniques are employed:
- Acupuncture
- Minor modifications on the accessories, e.g. the fingerboard or tailpiece
- Handcrafting accessory parts such as the bridge, soundpost, end buttons, and the bass bar
- Replacing accessories such as the screws for the chin rest, tail piece hanger or cello endpin
The process of sound regulation always takes place in the presence of the musician and requires their participation so that every step of the modification is understood.
The goal of sound regulation is to attain a fuller, softer tone, better responsiveness, a more direct connection between the musician and the instrument, and to improve the instrument's overall balance. Even wolf tones can be adjusted so that they are more playable.
To date, I have successfully treated over 300 instruments.
